If you are looking for an all-out budget urethane golf ball, this one offers good performance, especially in the short game. The improved core technology is designed to produce longer, straighter shots most notably from the tee box, plus a considerably tighter dispersion angle on iron shots and wedge play. This will certainly help the slower swinging players who are looking for a bit more speed and distance from their golf equipment. Cutting the balls open won’t really help much either as core coloring is very easy to change and the fact that there have been examples of balls from the same dozen with different core colors (not just a single OEM occupancy of this either). Quite frankly if you’re not used to playing a premium ball or if you don’t strike the ball consistently with your wedges to generate a lot of spin, then you won’t miss what you don’t know!

The HEX Soft Tour Golf Ball is designed for more distance, and more spin and control around the green. Let’s have a look at the five important factors which I look for when choosing a golf ball to play with. This difference was perhaps borne out most noticeably during my first round using the Hex Soft where I hit one of the best greenside bunker shots I’d played for some time, but it didn't spin and check in the way I’d have expected it to, but rolled out quite a long way past the flag. With its compression rating of 40, it is hard to disagree with Wilson when they claim this offering to be the 'world's softest golf ball'. Additionally, HPF is a proprietary ionomer blend made by DuPont that is commonly used for golf ball mantle layers. That is why they built this ball with a low-compression core, which reduces spin and increases distance on each shot. In fact, we tested them over a few rounds and found that this golf ball offers up an excellent sensation through impact, with the low compression core helping players reach greater ball speeds and increased distance in their long game. Pearl grade balls are almost like new, they still have the shiny finish of a brand new ball although they may contain player markings and logos.

For any high handicap players out there looking for a new pack of balls, this is definitely an offer you should check out. The balls will likely end up being given away (or traded for adult beverages) to friends who play non-urethane balls but I'll try to at least mess around with them both at the chipping area of the range at some point. Maybe someone can cut open a Hex Tour and a Hex Tour Soft to see if any differences can be determined that way. This not only results in inconsistencies between different OEMs, but sometimes between different model submissions from the same OEM even though they share the same construction.Biggest difference I found was the feel of a really compressed ball off the driver face with Hex Soft and not so much with Hex Black. The USGAs submission form for the conformance list requires counts of the number of total pieces and covers but different OEMs define the intermediary mantles and some times outer cores as additional covers. Like other models in this guide, the Soft Response has a low 50-compression, which means that those with fast swing speeds may see a drop off in distance at the top end of the bag. In the latest edition, we still see the two-piece construction but, thanks to a FastLayer core with a soft centre that gradually gets firmer as you move towards the cover, it is now able to snap back into shape more quickly, something which has been improved on for 2023. The lack of spin coupled with the firmer core technology means the ball flies longer and rolls out more.
