Description

That is ever the difference between the wise and the unwise: the latter wonders at what is unusual; the wise man wonders at the usual.

There is no great melodrama here – no infidelities, no acts of malicious violence, no hatred or vengeance.Once you start to pair off, however, and your previously single-and-carefree friends do likewise, you wake up one morning to realize that all your friends are couple-friends.

The premise of Crossing to Safety seems simple: Two young couples meet in 1937 as lowest-rung members of the University of Wisconsin faculty at Madison. As with A Gentleman in Moscow and The Heart's Invisible Furies, the inescapable popularity of this book on Goodreads was the white flash of a rabbit's tail that first caught my eye. Mrs Woolf, wife of the manager, is a very celebrated author and, in her own way, more important than Galsworthy. But apart from the themes/ideas, I loved this book mainly because I loved these four people and took such pleasure in their company. The story is told by an ageing Larry looking back and, early on, he raises the question of his reliability as narrator: ‘Recollection, I have found, is usually about half invention, and right now I realize that there is much about Sid and Charity Lang that I either invented or got secondhand. Charity, in the words of her daughter Hallie, ‘is like a choreographer, every little step is plotted out.
