Though the box only took players up to second level, additional Essentials products quickly supplemented it. Both are valid ways to tackle levelling up, but it’s telling Stormwreck Isle opts for the less maths-heavy version. When compared to something like, for example, the Pathfinder second edition Beginner Box, which offers a double-sided map, dice with different colors to easily know what’s a d12 and what’s a d20, cardboard tokens that pop out and are inserted into a plastic bases, books with a stable binding that can be shelved, quick reference cards, and more rules and utilities in its literature to last for many adventures beyond the printed one, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle feels very lacking. The dungeon master creates an adventure, which can be a one-off, meaning you can play the whole story in one session, or a longer-form campaign - an ongoing story that lasts multiple sessions.

Note that the zombies start far enough away from the characters that the characters have a round or two to fire arrows or prepare for the attack. Add or remove zombies and ghouls to increase or decrease the threat the characters face based on what feels right for the fun of the game. Consider the cardinal rule of improv — say “Yes, and…” to accept what your players want to do and come up with a way to make it work within the narrative and mechanics of the game.

You can use something as simple as Google Meet or Zoom to get started of course, but VTTs like Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, One More Multiverse, and others can replace the need for physical maps, dice, and character sheets entirely — even when playing in person. In a similar vein, as a dungeon master you'll want to consider whether to choose a homebrew or pre-built campaign - we'd recommend the latter if you're just starting out.

Four to five is usually the ideal number of players, though you can have more or less with some modifications to ensure that the challenges don’t become too hard or easy. Runara, the peaceful yet mysterious leader of the Dragon’s Rest cloister will introduce you to the Isle and its many problems. Would it be really that much more work to print out the specific spells for Cleric and Wizard on a separate, smaller piece of paper? It addresses an issue often brought up by newcomers regarding the accuracy of the game's title, and just to keep everyone happy, this is an adventure that features dragons. While that won't suit every party, it's perfect for those comfortable role-playing and eager to do so.If you're playing online you too have the choice of running the battle in the theater of the mind or using an online virtual tabletop for gridded play. While a single encounter can last a few hours at the table, a published campaign book might last a few months to a year — or more — with regular play. Learn to follow along and have fun; don’t hold on too tightly to what you thought the session would be.

Without having to worry too much about how the campaign flows from session to session, they can instead prioritize getting things right minute to minute. For instance, The Sunless Citadel is considered by many to be one of the best adventures to introduce new players to without being a burden on the DM. Granted, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle doesn’t seem like the most impressive starter set when you first lift the lid. Sure, the dice are a nice, pretty blue pearloid color (they seem to be identical to the ones that shipped with the original fifth edition starter set), but there’s only one set of six dice, and there isn’t even an extra d10 for percentage rolls. The group are invited by an old acquaintance by the name of Gundren Rockseeker to accompany him to the small village of Phandalin on a business venture, having set off early due to excitement the group takes a small wagon to the village in the hope of meeting him, though things (as may have been predicted) are not always so simple. If you’re new and are thinking of getting this set to start out in the hobby, it’s kind of a hard thing to recommend as well since, aside from the dice (more on those in just a second), there’s nothing here you’ll be taking into the rest of your TTRPG career, whether you’re a player or Dungeon Master.
