Alexa Demie is an actor, musician, and multi-hyphenate talent who currently stars as Maddy in HBO's Euphoria. In 2021, the Fairy Tales photo teasers featured almost empty diners, bedrooms and hospitals; readers blending fact and fiction could imagine these scenarios coming to life in front of them. Here, their subversive folk tales are brought to vivid life via handwritten stories the pair worked on together, alongside illustrations by artist Evita Flores and art director Sandra Leko’s gloriously whimsical pastel pink layouts.

This collaboration sees Alexa Demie embody empowered femme mythical beings in a world like ours today. One photo shoot and a pair of prosthetic elf ears later, the pair decided to push the project further, eventually crafting nine individual fables with a touch of something both sinister and seductive.Fairy Tales is] a collaboration with the photographer Petra Collins -- a body of work that reimagines the female creatures who inhabit folk- and fairy-tales, who are often cast as one-dimensional monsters or temptresses. Indeed, the interplay of text and images throughout the book has less in common with engravings from a well-thumbed tome of old fairy tales than with something like Madonna’s infamous Fabien Baron–designed, Steven Meisel–lensed publication, Sex. Fairy Tales’s cast of banshees and sprites and fallen angels may appear to have been tied up or subjugated by a villain, but look a little closer and you’ll notice that the mermaid has bound herself up in shibari ropes or the sirens are, in fact, sliding down stripper poles under the eerie spotlights of a seedy nightclub. Created in collaboration with Euphoria star and muse Alexa Demie, Collins has just dropped “Fairy Tales,” her latest book in the form of nine erotic short stories based on works by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, and more. Once upon a time, there was a subversive fashion photographer who released her book this week…oh, wait!

Shooting since the age of 15, her work is fueled by self-discovery and a contemporary femininity that explores the complex intersection of life as a young woman online and off. Fairytales is an erotic folklore collection of Petra Collins and Alexa Demie s illustrated short stories. Petra and Alexa s chapters of elves, mermaids, sirens, water sprites, fallen angels, fairies, witches, and banshees blend their own stories with retold fairy tales. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Most of these stories do not make any sense, but Alexa Demie looks great so I can’t say that I’m disappointed because I got exactly what I was expecting when I got this book. For both Collins and Demie, the project was rooted in the darker corners of the fairy tales that they grew up with. Petra Collins is a multi-talented artist and director whose photography set the stylistic tone for much of the 2010s. Shooting since the age of 15, her work is fueled by self-discovery and a contemporary femininity which explore the complex intersection of life as a young woman online and off.

Collins has created a style that will go down in history as one that people can only hope to try to recreate. I loved every chapter of this book, and what stuck with me were the themes of being okay being alone, as well as sexuality and sensuality for the purpose of womens joy.

Alexa is currently working on her first EP, developing and producing film and TV, and engaged in social-impact work focused on equality and representation, especially for the Latinx community and the next generation of youth. I think this book is a great signifier of the zeitgeist and the challenges womxn face today, particularly on social media and image-based communications.
