Spaceboy is written on a snippet of history that changed our world and allowed us to dream of bigger things. Ruth loves to look up into the stars at night, imagining shooting up into space in a rocket like her idol, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

The villains are properly villainous, a president is really familiar (but I can't quite put my finger on it - smirk) and a stereotypical military Major can hardly stand up with the weight of his medals and his strong chin. This book has various examples of onomatopoeia and vocabulary which could extend the narrative writing of young students and provides links to 1960s history and brief information about space. This one did have Roald Dahl vibes with the orphaned children and nasty relatives, and of course we have the token bad guy.

Bursting with action, laugh-out-loud moments and lots of surprises along the way, Spaceboy is the unmissable David Walliams space adventure that all kids will love.Stuck on a remote farm with her awful aunt, twelve-year-old orphan Ruth spends every night gazing at the stars, dreaming of adventure. As much as they try to escape (riding ostriches, rolling in giant transparent balls, running in the desert, or sliding in craters), Ruth, Spaceboy, and Yuri end up in a top-secret US military base, caught by the faceless figures who happen to be soldiers in special costumes. Plus there was no moral ending like in his other books: boy in a dress, gangsta granny, grandpa's great escape e.

His tenth novel, BAD DAD, was an immediate number one, following the triumph of THE MIDNIGHT GANG, the biggest-selling children’s book of 2016. And so begins yet another madcap adventure with over-the-top villains, over-long chases, disgusting lists, hidden topical references, brave and resourceful children, and lots of short chapters to keep children page-turning at a tremendous rate. One night, using the telescope she's scavenged to watch the stars, Ruth is astounded to see an ACTUAL UFO crashing near the farm.Still, the story did have heart and my son enjoyed my dramatic reading even if it was all a bit tiresome for me. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook).

A new illustrator with a slightly different style, but any reader will still recognise Walliams' famed characters and writing style. Aunt Dorothy makes Ruth work from dawn till dusk on her failing Ostrich farm, and also makes her share the minimal food she does get with her only friend - her dog Yuri. A helter skelter chase follows on ostrich back and more with all of Walliam’s sound effects decorating the text.

Not just because it's a different illustrator but he has changed how he illustrates, with some of the illustrations drawn in the style of a comic. It's not about the length of time it takes a child to finish a book, it's about consistency, and if a child reads frequently, daily, for about 10 minutes, that's all the difference it makes between developing reasoning skills, confidence, a great vocab and the hunger to learn more, to know more. As to the end of it, that gives rise to a galaxy of speculation but the young readers won’t mind, especially in a world where adults are very often the enemy.
