Look around you and you will see that everything in the natural world is closing down — you can take the darkness as a cue to do a little of this yourself. Divided into the 12 months, a set of tables each month gives it the feel and weight of a traditional almanac, providing practical information that gives access to the outdoors and the seasons, perfect for expeditions, meteor-spotting nights and beach holidays.

It includes key dates, tide tables and garden tasks; constellations and moon phases; sunrises, folk songs, seasonal recipes plus a ‘bun of the month’; and – because 2023 will be a good year for planet spotting – the solar system and the zodiac. A classic month by month guide to the world around us, including key dates, tide tables, the zodiac, seasonal recipes, the solar system even music, plus so much more. Every month there are records of heavenly activity, locations of planets and the best time to spot such things in the sky. Each month has a Bun of the Month plus another appropriate recipes - just to give you a taste (see what I did there) of what to expect fig and tahini challah, meadowsweet champagne and marzipan hot cross buns are all on offer. You can unsubscribe from our list at any point by changing your preferences, or contacting us directly. From moon phases and tide times, to mythology and astronomy, from what’s happening in ponds to recipes and folk songs… this month by month guide informs and inspires. I have often bought an Almanac for the coming year and they have varied in quality, usefulness and beauty.

The independent-minded quarterly magazine that combines good looks, good writing and a personal approach. It’s evident from the acknowledgements that The Almanac has been a collaborative effort and I really think that collaboration makes it more than the sum of its parts. There are also features on each month's unique nature, such as the meteor shower of the month, beehive behaviour, folklore, seasonal recipes and charts tracking moon phases and tides. This is a wonderful pocket sized but packed book to guide us through the months and seasons with inspiring recipes, sketches, information on the night sky, plants and trees to look for, and so much more. And, threaded through the book, are in-depth insights to the cycle of a garden pond throughout the year.

Lia Leendertz also provides features on each month’s unique nature, such as beehive behaviour, folklore, seasonal recipes and charts tracking moon phases and tides. The illustrations by Whooli Chen are beautiful and I couldn’t decide if they would have been even better in colour or whether that would detract from their exquisite subtlety. And so this month we come to glittering, sparkling life, just as nature reaches its most complete hibernation. I love books like this and while a diary often gives you basic information, an Almanac goes into a lot more detail. There’s a handy index at the back, a ribboned bookmark, lots of drawings and a textured cover which add to make this a must have book for 2023!You will find yourself referring to The Almanac all year long, revisiting it again and again, and looking forward to the next edition as the year draws to a close.
